For the longest time I genuinely couldn’t tell you the difference between a latte and a flat white.
I’d just point at the menu board and hope for the best.
Now that I actually know what separates these drinks, ordering feels a lot less like guessing. Here’s the breakdown.
1. Caffè Latte
Espresso with steamed milk and a thin layer of foam on top.
This is the baseline most other coffee drinks get compared to. Mild, creamy, and easy to customize with syrups.
2. Flat White
Espresso with steamed milk, but less foam and a stronger coffee to milk ratio than a latte.
If you find lattes too mild, this is usually the better pick.
3. Cappuccino
Equal parts espresso, steamed milk, and foam.
The foam here is thicker than a latte’s, which gives it a lighter, airier texture even though the coffee flavor is just as strong.
4. Americano
Espresso shots topped with hot water.
Closest thing to drip coffee you’ll get from an espresso machine. Simple, no milk, straightforward caffeine.
5. Cold Brew
Coffee steeped in cold water for around 20 hours, never touched by heat.
This process makes it naturally smoother and less acidic than iced coffee made from hot brewed coffee poured over ice.
6. Nitro Cold Brew
Cold brew infused with nitrogen gas.
The nitrogen creates a creamy, cascading foam on top without any dairy added. It’s also naturally a little sweeter than regular cold brew because of how smooth it is.
7. Caramel Macchiato
Steamed milk with vanilla syrup, espresso poured on top, finished with a caramel drizzle.
The order of how it’s built actually matters here. It’s the reverse of a latte, which is what creates the layered look and taste.
8. Mocha
Espresso, steamed milk, and mocha sauce.
Basically a coffee flavored hot chocolate, if you want to think of it that way. Sweeter and richer than a regular latte.
9. Doppio (Espresso)
Just two straight shots of espresso, no milk, no water.
If you want the purest coffee flavor with the least amount of extra stuff, this is it.
Quick Comparison Table
| Drink | Milk | Foam | Strength |
|---|---|---|---|
| Latte | Lots | Thin layer | Mild |
| Flat White | Less | Minimal | Strong |
| Cappuccino | Some | Thick | Strong |
| Americano | None | None | Medium |
| Cold Brew | None (unless added) | None | Smooth, medium |
Wrapping Up
Knowing the actual differences between these drinks makes ordering so much easier, and honestly makes you sound like you know what you’re doing at the counter.
Which one is your go to? Let me know in the comments, and if you’ve got a favorite I didn’t mention, I’d love to hear it.
